problem is risk of runaway fires with large scale battery storage. Federated storage (many small caches instead of a few mega sized ones) is one way to solve this.
My understanding is this is a solved problem. Batteries were mostly laptop style Lithium, built for compactness and light weight. Not really a requirement for grid batteries. New packaging and even completely new chemistries are changing the math on batteries very very rapidly.
