The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is Fishing Gear

In spite of the photos you see on the news of household waste, the vast majority of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch seems to be from commercial fishing, mostly nets.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is not an island of trash: its plastic averages roughly 50 kilograms spread across each square kilometer, and a 2022 study found 75 to 86 percent of the large floating debris by mass came from fishing gear, not household waste

Pity the Nation

A friend from the Bay Area sent me a pic of the City Lights bookstore with banners quoting Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem Pity the Nation.  The San Francisco Chronicle has an article about it:

‘Pity the nation’: San Francisco’s City Lights Bookstore displays banners warning against tyranny

The poem and its connection to a similar work by Khalil Gibran is in a posting on The Allen Ginsburg Project blog.
